On September 18, however, an unusual GTA 6 leak caused over 90 videos and screenshots from the game’s early, alpha build to go online. The hack has been acknowledged and verified by Rockstar, and the company is attempting to remove the exposed information from the internet. When was the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 announced?

The first GTA 6 revelation was made in February 2022 as part of a larger GTA 5 and GTA Online Community Update. Rockstar Games sneakily revealed that GTA 6 is “well underway” at that time. Rockstar stated that Grand Theft Auto 6 is “actively being developed” and thanked everyone for their support, adding, “We cannot wait to step into the future with you!”

Since the formal announcement of GTA 6 in February 2022, there hasn’t been any official news, although that is typical Rockstar Games. Of course, there was the enormous leak, which you can read about below, and reactions to it, but aside from that, the developer hasn’t said much about the much awaited sequel.

Are the most recent GTA 6 leaks accurate?

On September 18, 2022, there was a historic GTA 6 leak that resulted in the online distribution of dozens of pictures and videos purportedly taken from an early build of the game. In the 48 hours since the GTA 6 leak initially surfaced, the GTA Forums have attempted to remove all traces of the illegally downloaded pictures and videos in order to prevent being “obliterated by Rockstar”. The dedicated GTA 6 Reddit has also removed all of the leak’s links, images, and videos, and has pledged to remain online on one condition: “We will permit comments pertaining to the leak without attaching the leaks. Comments with download links to the leak are not permitted.

Since then, Take-Two and Rockstar, the parent company, have both commented on the leaks. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of GTA developer Take-Two Interactive, stated that the leak was “terribly unfortunate” and that “we take those sorts of incidents very seriously indeed” in a recent earnings call.

It’s comforting to know that there is no proof that any tangible assets were taken, and the leak won’t have any impact on development or anything similar. But it is quite frustrating, and it makes us more cautious about cybersecurity-related issues.

Should GTA 6 be postponed?
