Oscar-Winning ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ Actor Louise Fletcher Dies at 88

Louise Fletcher, the actress, has passed away at the age of 88. She had won an Academy Award for her role in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. She died in her sleep and was surrounded by her family at her home in Montdurausse, France. Her agent David Shaul informed the same of the press. Andrew Bick, her son, told the Hollywood Reporter that she died on Friday of natural cases. She had also survived two bouts with breast cancer. She also won the Academy Award for the best leading actress in 1976 for portraying the ruthless nurse Mildred Ratched. It was created by Milos Forman and was his adaptation of Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel of the same name.

The movie also won awards for best picture, best director, best screenplay, and best leading actor.
She had used American Sign Language in her acceptance speech that night to thank her deaf parents. She also thanked the audience for hating her. Her portrayal of the character in the film was so spectacular that Netflix made a series called Ratched in 2020. It tells the origin story of the nurse-turned-villain. She was born 22 July 1934 and was the second of four children. She had married producer Jerry Bick in the early 1960s and had two sons, Andrew and John, with him. The couple got divorced in 1977. She is survived by her two sons.

No cause of death has been specified. Her agent David Shaul that she had passed away in her sleep at home, which she had built from a 300-year-old farmhouse. He said that earlier today, she was happy, and she said to her family that she couldn’t believe that she had created something so meaningful for her. Fletcher had an acting career that spanned more than 60 years, and it included some spectacular performances on both television and on film. Fletcher became only the third woman to win the Academy Award, the BAFTA Award, and the Golden Globe Award for a single performance in the film” One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”
